Gender-Based and Sexual Violence
Gender-based and sexual violence (GBSV) is a pervasive issue in our society, and the Western University community of students, employees and alumni is not immune. By mobilizing a truly campus-wide approach, Western is committed to ongoing trauma-informed, survivor-centred efforts in the prevention, support and response to GBSV through education, training and resources.
Many of Western’s actions and initiatives are guided by 39 recommendations put forward in two reports from spring 2022. This site is intended to highlight progress made on many of the recommendations, while showcasing the research and collaborative efforts that are helping position Western as a national leader in GBSV prevention, support and response among higher education institutions in Canada.
While the recommendations vary in breadth, depth and specificity, all can be categorized under five themes:
- Education & Training
- Survivor Supports & Resources
- Policy, Procedures & Accountability
- Environmental Safety
- Cross-Cutting Recommendations on Communications, Coordination & Culture Change
Some examples of what has been accomplished include (but are by no means limited to):
- Introduction of two mandatory GBSV training modules for incoming students, now called “Mustangs for Consent.” This initiative has thrived under an exceptional coordinated effort among Student Experience, Housing, and the Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women and Children (CREVAWC)
- Development and approval of the GBSV Dashboard
- Development of a comprehensive GBSV Communication Strategy, including a communication calendar of important dates/events
- Senate approval of an anti-GBSV statement to be included in all undergraduate Course Outlines at Western
- Engaging academic leaders in a plenary session at their annual leader conference concerning the impact of GBSV on the workplace, legislation about sexual misconduct as stated in Bill 26 Strengthening Post-Secondary Institutions and Students Act (2022), and their responsibilities as leaders with respect to Western’s GBSV Policy (MAPP 1.52) and Non-Discrimination, Harassment, and Sexual Misconduct Policy (MAPP 1.35)
