Leadership Reviews
The University of Western Ontario Act (1982) empowers the Board of Governors, on the recommendation of the President, to appoint senior academic and administrative officers to the University, provided that all such appointments are in accordance with the policies and procedures established by Senate and recommended to the Board. For the appointment of Deans of Faculties and Schools, as well as for the appointment of the University Librarian and Vice-Provosts, the Provost & Vice-President (Academic) serves as the Chair of all Selection Committees established by the authority of Senate through its Nominating Sub-Committee. For detailed information on how Selection Committees are appointed, please see Appointment Procedures for Senior Academic and Administrative Officers of the University.
Deans, the University Librarian (UL) and Vice-Provosts at Western are typically appointed to five-year terms. A minimum of 12 months before the appointment term is scheduled to conclude, a Senate-appointed Review & Selection Committee is established with a mandate to review the performance of the sitting Dean, UL or Vice-Provost and to deliberate the merits of re-appointment or engaging in a search for a new candidate.
For a current list of all Senior Academic appointments at Western and their related terms, see chart.
At appropriate times in the review and selection process, members of the campus community -- faculty, staff and students -- are invited to participate in meetings and/or submit written comments as a means to sharing their individual views on the merits of sitting senior academic leaders and/or candidates who are vying for senior academic appointments.
